Barcade Crawl II - Saturday 10/18

In case you haven't seen BrewYork's post yet, I want to officially invite you on the most epic beer and gaming crawl of your life. If you've been reading for a while, you'll remember that back in December 2011, BrewYork and Beertography teamed up for a Barcade Crawl. At the time, it was to celebrate the opening of Barcade Philadelphia which was the third location to open. Flash forward to present day, and we have the FIFTH Barcade opening Thursday October 9th. Guess where we're going with this?

Yes, we're going to all five Barcades in one day. Let me just write that out one more time. We're going to ALL FIVE BARCADES in one day. Philadelphia, Jersey City, Chelsea, St. Mark's and Brooklyn - ALL via public transportation.

Thankfully, Chris of BrewYork really knows his public transportation and figured out our whole itinerary for the day:

- 9:00am: Meet at New York Penn Station by the NJ Transit ticket booths; purchase joint NJT/SEPTA ticket for 9:15 departure to Trenton/Philadelphia (don’t be late!)
- 11:45am: Arrive at 30th Street Station Philly; take Market-Frankford Line to Girard (three block walk to Barcade Phily)
12:00pm: Arrive at Barcade Philly! (Lunch available)
2:15pm: Leave Barcade Philly, take Market-Frankford Line to 30th Street Station
2:30pm: Arrive at 30th Street Station Philly; purchase joint NJT/SEPTA ticket for 2:49 departure to Newark Penn Station
5:15pm: Arrive at Newark Penn Station; take PATH to Grove St. (three block walk to Barcade Jersey City)
5:45pm: Arrive at Barcade Jersey City! (Dinner available)
- 7:15pm: Leave Barcade Jersey City; take PATH to 23rd St. (one block walk to Barcade New York)
7:45pm: Arrive at Barcade New York!
9:15pm: Leave Barcade New York, take N/R Trains to 8th St.-NYU (two block walk to Barcade St. Mark’s)
9:30pm: Arrive at Barcade St. Mark’s!
11:00pm: Leave Barcade St. Marks, take L Train to Lorimer St. (three block walk to Barcade Brooklyn)
- 11:30pm: Arrive at Barcade Brooklyn!

Yes, that's a long day. But it's going to be a lot of fun. It's all about staying hydrated, pacing yourself and enjoying the scenery. If you don't feel up to hitting all five locations, then by all means - meet us at any of them and come to as many as you can!

Barcade St. Mark's - Opening Tomorrow 10/9

Well how about that? Less than a year after the opening of Barcade Chelsea, here we are celebrating the grand opening of Barcade #5! That's right FIVE Barcades now exist. It truly is becoming a Barcade empire. This location is in the infamous East Village of Manhattan, on St. Mark's Place no less.

If you're familiar with any of the other four Barcades, this location is definitely a bit different. A bit more narrow with a different overall motif. With a short descent heading down to the bar as you walk in, it comes off a bit more of a basement arcade. With 20 American Craft Beers on tap at all times. One thing of note: no hard alcohol at this location - this was to appease the concerned local community board. But if you're like us, that won't matter - beer me please!

The exterior is still awaiting the patented Barcade sign, but just look for the entrance next to the St. Mark's Karaoke sign.

Another big difference with this location is the games. With their fifth iteration, Barcade has finally acquiesced to the thousands of requests they've gotten to include 90's fighting games. Among the highlights for me being Mortal Kombat 2 and Ultimate Mortal Kombat 3 which I remember spending many a quarter on back in the day.

This Barcade will have food available as well, just not right away. They open officially TOMORROW Thursday 10/9 for beers and gaming! Check out the slideshow below for additional photos:

Barcade New York - Now Open!

UPDATE 6/3/14: Barcade New York opens TODAY at 12pm. Rumor has it the beer list is going to be pretty epic.

The Barcade empire is expanding! It feels like just yesterday that we published our sneak preivew of Barcade Jersey City and the opening of Barcade Philadelphia. And now, here we are in 2014 with an exclusive first look at the first Barcade to open in Manhattan!

Located at 148 West 24th Street in the Chelsea neighborhood of Manhattan, Barcade's fourth location is more than a worthy sequel to it's predecessors. Barcade's owners tell us that their opening is imminent. As in, any time in the next 2 weeks! Keep an eye on their Twitter feed to get the most up to date information.

For those unfamiliar with the other locations, you're in for a real treat. Barcade is just what it sounds like: Bar + Arcade. The twist being that all of the beer is American craft beer and the games are all old school. As you'll notice from some of the photos, whereas previously it was all games from the 80s and earlier, they've finally begun to showcase games from the early 1990s such as X-Men, Daytona USA and NBA Jam. You can check out the full games list by downloading the new Barcade App which also lists evey beer on tap at every Barcade location.

Some of you may recall a few years ago, not long after Barcade Philly opened when we got a group of thirsty folks together and visited ALL THREE Barcades in ONE day. Well, that was one of the best days ever so you KNOW we'll be doing all FOUR in one day. Details coming soon.

For more information, check out Barcade New York's website and follow them on Twitter. Here's a slideshow of more photos for you to drool over:

Barcade Crawl

This past Saturday, some friends and I decided to do something a little crazy. Go to all three Barcade locations (Philadelphia, Jersey City and Brooklyn) in one day. This all came about after I visited Barcade Philly for the first time a few weeks ago and realized it wouldn't be very hard to go to both the Philly and Jersey City locations in one afternoon. After describing my trip and my thought to one Chris O' Leary of Brew York, New York, the gears in his head were immediately turning. A few days later and Chris had already set up a Facebook Event and planned out a whole route entirely utilizing mass transit. Uh oh, we were really doing this.

Chris already has a great recap on his site, so I won't go into it here. But we made it to Jersey City just after 5:00 and Brooklyn at around 9:00. Not too bad really. Obviously Philly was the long haul, but still worth it as it's a great venue. Here are a few photos to add to the mix:

They have a smoker. This means already amazing food is actually smoked amazing food.

If you like this idea but don't feel like taking mass transit, you're in luck. This Saturday 12/10, Barcade and Sixpoint are joining forces for a Barcade Crawl by BUS! A $100 ticket gets you transportation round trip from Brooklyn to all 3 Barcades, 5 oz. pours of all 10 exclusive Sixpoint beers at each location AND food in Philly. That's a pretty great deal AND all proceeds are going to charity. Do it!

Barcade Philadelphia: Now Open!

There are now three (count 'em, 3) Barcades in existence. The original in Williamsburg, Brooklyn just celebrated its 7th Anniversary, Barcade Jersey City just opened its doors this past April and now we have Barcade Philadelphia located in the city's Fishtown section.

For those familiar with Barcade's other two locations, you'll certainly see some similarities upon entering the latest incarnation. One major difference here in Philly is the brickwork throughout the bar. It gives the place way more of a old-school feel to go along with the vintage arcade games.

It already feels like this place has been around forever and it's only been open two weeks.

Founders Breakfast Stout at 12pm on a Sunday? Sure!

One huge plus about this Barcade is its high-top seating. If you find your friends but there's not a seat for you, you can still chat at eye-level. It sounds silly but it makes a difference.

This is a shot looking from the game area back at the bar. the bar actually curves around as you can see, and the part in the foreground is where you pick up your food order. Nice little touch.

There are some amazing games here in Fishtown. I chose to play a little Double Dragon which I don't think I've ever seen in an arcade. Oh, and of course, every Barcade MUST have a Tapper.

Another unique part about the Philly location is the outdoor seating area. Nothing fancy, but a nice space to hang out and get some fresh air while drinking your beer.

There's also a small roped section for smoking.

Speaking of smoking, here's the good kind! Barcade Philly smokes their own sausages and bacon. I think I need to repeat that. Barcade Philly smokes their own sausages and bacon. It smelled AMAZING and if I hadn't come directly from brunch I would have definitely got some.

So there you have it! If you're ever in Philly, check it out. It took me exactly 90 minutes to drive between the Philly and Jersey City locations....hmm...who will be the first person to visit all 3 Barcades in 1 day?
